Summer Intensive: August 1-3, 2023 The Tuscaloosa Community Dancers Summer Intensive is a 3-day intensive workshop for students ages 8+. Dancers will be broken up into different levels according to their appropriate technical level. They will receive their level placement upon arrival on the first day, and it is at the faculty's discretion if they need to move levels. Students will attend daily ballet technique, pointe (if applicable) and variations classes, as well as specialty classes such as ballet jumps & turns, modern dance, pantomime, and seminars on topics important to the developing dancer.
Our Mini Summer Intensive is a 3-day intensive workshop for students ages 5-7. Students attend daily ballet classes as well as supplemental classes to prepare them for an audition setting.
Summer Intensive Ages 8+: $400** 9:00 am -3:00 pm A 3 day intensive training program with guest teachers geared towards getting back into shape for the Fall Semester of dance classes and Nutcracker! Dancers will trainapproximately 5 hours a day in styles including ballet, variations, modern, pilates, jumps and turns, and more. **Please note, by attending this workshop, you DO NOT have to pay the Nutcracker audition fee. Mini Intensive Ages 5-7: $150** 12:00-2:00 pm A 3 day intensive training program for 5-6 year olds geared towards technique, stretching, performance practice, and audition preparation. They will dance for 2 hours/day. **Please note, by attending this workshop, you DO NOT have to pay the Nutcracker audition fee.
Intensive, Workshop & Audition Attire: Ladies: Black leotard, pink tights under leotard and inside shoes, flat and pointe shoes (if applicable). Hair must be neatly and securely tied back. Skirts may be allowed at the intensive and workshop only, not at the audition. Gentleman: White dance shirt, black or grey tights, and ballet slippers.
*By registering for this intensive, you do not have to register and pay for the Nutcracker workshop & audition. Check the box at check out yes or no when asked if auditioning for Nutcracker.
2023 TCD Intensive Faculty: Emily Bromberg-Master Ballet teacher internationally and current dancer with Dimensions Dance Theater of Miami. She is a former principal soloist for 11 years at Miami City Ballet and soloist with Slovakia National Theatre. Rainer Krenstetter- Artistic Director of Unblanche in Tokyo, Associate Artistic Director at The Margot Fonteyn Academy of Ballet in Arizona, former Principal dancer with Miami City Ballet. Since leaving Miami City Ballet he is dancing as an international guest principal dancer all around the world and is the 2023 recipient of the "Fonteyn Legacy Centenary Award". Mary Margaret Scalici- Certified Pilates Instructor, University of Alabama at Birmingham ballet teacher, ASFA Dance Dept adjunct faculty, and former TCD member Aidan Nettles- ABT® Certified Teacher, Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Alabama Alden McShan- Tuscaloosa Community Dancers Artistic Director, former TCD member
Auditions: August 4th and 5th, 2023 Audition to be a part of our 2023 Nutcracker production and dancers ages 10 and up can audition to be a part of our 2023-2024 TCD Company. In addition to being cast in The Nutcracker, TCD Company Members will perform in our 2023 Spring Show, receive discounted master classes, and may be called upon throughout the season to dance in fundraisers, benefits, outreach, and publicity events for TCD. Additionally, faces of the company will be added to our website and dancers will gain the experience of being in a pre-professional dance company. If you would like to be considered to be in our company, you will select that you are auditioning for company in your registration paperwork.
*Please note that if you are attending our ballet intensive, your audition fee is waived. Auditions will be broken up by age. Come to the following audition time according to your age as of Sept 1, 2023:
Ages 13+: (Possible Roles Include but ARE NOT limited to: Act 1 Party Dolls, Act 2 Variations, Flower and Snow Corps, Snowflakes, Soldiers, Rats, Nutcracker, Rat King, Party Girls, Clara, Maid, Party Parents) *audition en pointe. Dancers not en pointe yet are encouraged to audition with the 10- 12 group. You must have at least one year of experience en pointe in order to audition en pointe. Important Notes:
A MANDATORY parent meeting will be held on Friday, August 4th. TCD’s policies and procedures will be reviewed and staff will be on hand to answer any questions. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE RULES AND DON’T HESITATE TO ASK QUESTIONS. THIS IS A SERIOUS AND TIME CONSUMING COMMITMENT.
Dancers must be enrolled in a ballet class at least two days per week in order to be eligible for TCD productions (excluding 5-7 year olds who are cast as an Angel)
Saturday, August 5th- Registration begins one hour prior to each audition group. Signed forms and audition fee made payable online are due at this time.
You must have at least one year of experience en pointe in order to audition en pointe. Dancers interested in company membership will be considered at this time*

Rehearsals will begin the weekend of September 8th (angels will begin in October). They will mostly be held on Saturdays, but can sometimes be on Friday afternoons or Sundays. Please note the mandatory rehearsal dates below. Missing mandatory rehearsals may result in performances taken away.
Please note that dancers are only allowed TWO absences throughout the rehearsal process. Absences exceeding the 2 limit may be grounds for the removal of the dancer from a performance.
Dancers MAY NOT miss rehearsals on these days: -Following Thanksgiving: Sunday, Nov. 26th -The Sunday before the show: December 3rd -Theatre week: December 4th-10th. Please do not ask to be excused from these rehearsals; missing any of these rehearsals will count double towards your total allotment for misses.
