TCD began 2018 with an Outreach program pairing with the Boys & Girls Club of West Alabama. Our goal is to provide dance education to more children in the community that are not exposed to the art form and give them the opportunity to learn dance. Our first partnership with the Boys & Girls Club was a 6 week program in which company members Mims Mckee, Kathryn Sain, Lucy Rogers, Jennifer Walker, Meredith Cook, and Elizabeth Vann met once a week at the club to teach the children dance classes. Our outreach targeted grades 2-5, beginning January 30th and wrapping up March 6th, 2018 with a performance for the parents and Club followed by a reception. Most recently, TCD Company members met with the Boys and Girls club throughout October 2018. Company members Mims Mckee, Kathryn Sain, Meredith Link and Emily Boles taught a dance class at the club every Monday of the month and the kids performed a dance to "I Want Candy" at the end of the month for their friends and family. The benefits of an outreach program go farther than to expose children to the arts. Dance education has been shown to improve learning skills and help to develop social skills as well as build self-esteem. Our hope is that this and future outreach programs will further TCD's mission “To stimulate, promote and develop interest in the art of dance.” |
